As North America’s largest printing technology trade show, SGIA Expo has always been a highlight of the print industry’s year. We were excited to exhibit at the 2018 event alongside our US partner and distributor, GMG Americas, meeting delegates from across the wide-format industry.
Centered around the theme of ‘what’s on the horizon for print?’, it was apt that one of the most popular trends of SGIA Expo 2018 was the groundbreaking capabilities of automation. As margins become ever tighter, efficiency has become king for many businesses and more and more PSPs are looking for ways to boost throughput and reduce wastage.
With the SGIA 2018 Product of the Year jewel for PrintFactory Cloud taking pride of place on our booth, the product’s automation capabilities were a key talking point amongst delegates. Through dynamically scaling nesting workflows and cloud-based job processing with local delivery to RIPs and printers, PrintFactory removes the potential for human error and enables a smooth transition to true and total lights-out automation for LFPs.
While automation is the future of print, true progression relies on a sound foundation of effective color management. As brand guidelines get more demanding and print-buyer standards grow steeper, color matching was a key concern for delegates visiting the PrintFactory booth.
To support LFP PSPs in their journey for maximum efficiency, in the run-up to SGIA Expo we launched our two-part color management guide, titled: ‘Breaking Color Convention for a More Productive Wide-Format Workflow’. The guide highlights how an over-reliance on default solutions could be a root cause of inconsistent color production, and provides practical advice on overcoming well-known challenges of color management.
Throughout the show we shared what we believe to be the secret to achieving complete color consistency across devices and substrates: challenging the status quo. Once PSPs have evaluated their existing workflow and centralized their systems, the step to color consistency lies in making the move away from the constraints of ICC towards the game-changing flexibility and accuracy of DeviceLink profiling.
DeviceLink is well-known by the print industry but little understood. Delegates were interested to see the superior output that could be achieved using PrintFactory’s advanced color engine, which enables PSPs to create DeviceLink profiles in just a few clicks and effortlessly recalibrate printers to their ‘golden state’ for consistent color.
Automation and colour management were just two of many trends at the show, and the sheer number of exciting technologies on display promised an exciting future for wide-format print. Although 2018 marked the last ever SGIA Expo before the event becomes Printing United in 2019, the show’s legacy lives on in the rapid advance of printing technology at large.
As a company that offers solutions for wide-format, textile, ceramics and interior decor printers, we’re looking forward to seeing the convergence of solutions across sectors at the first ever Printing United event next year.
